Baking is one of the most underrated ways of cooking pork chops. However, with the right ingredients and patience, one can essentially turn this humble dish into a gourmet sensation. Nowadays, people are concerned about how healthy the food that they eat. Although pork is not entirely a healthy food per se, frying it could sometimes raise its cholesterol level,
Baking pork is an interesting alternative to frying or even grilling. Baking creates less mess, it contains less fat, and less cholesterol. People have already embraced the idea of baking fish or chicken. However, for some, baking pork chops is still a relatively new idea. Depending on the palate, some might appreciate baked pork compared to frying or grilling it.
Baking requires quite a skill, but with proper guidance, it can be done easily. Baking also requires a handful of ingredients, unlike grilling which usually only requires salt and pepper. Nevertheless, these ingredients are easy to acquire and can be bought at a local grocery store.
- 6 half-inch center cut pork chops
- 5 teaspoons of paprika
- 1 cup of fat-free evaporated milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon of parmesan cheese
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon red pepper
- 1/3 teaspoon olive oil
- ¾ cup cornflakes
Make sure to remove any excess fat on the pork chops. Break the egg into a bowl and make sure to separate the white. Combine the egg white and the evaporated milk and beat for at least a minute. Put the pork chops on the egg white and milk combination and let it sit aside. Make sure that the pork chops are properly submerged to the mixture.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Using a separate bowl, combine the bread crumbs and cornflakes to a very fine consistency. Add in paprika, oregano, salt, red pepper, black pepper, garlic powder and parmesan cheese to the bowl. Make sure that everything is properly mixed.
Using the olive oil, grease a metal non-stick baking dish. Once the oven is preheated, take the pork chops and dip each one on the spice mixture. Make sure to coat both sides of the cut thoroughly. Arrange the pork chops in the baking dish making sure that they are in a single layer and that nothing is on top of the other. Bake each sides of the pork chops for 20 minutes uncovered. Serve.
This dish is highly recommended to be served over a bed of garlic rice or couscous. Steamed vegetables or a green salad are also ideal side dishes. For those who to reduce the fat content of the pork chops even more, instead of using a baking dish, try using a roasting pan with slats. This allows the fat to drip through the slats and not mix in with the pork chops. Just remember to grease the roasting pan with olive oil in order to prevent the pork chops from sticking.
